🤔 Why is it important to understand roles in a team?

Everyone who starts their journey in IT, sooner or later, encounters the following terms: jun, middle, senior, Team Lead. These words are heard at interviews, in resumes, at meetups, and in jokes. But what do they really mean?

Understanding roles is useful not only for beginners, but also for those who are building a career: it helps to understand where to grow, what skills to develop, and what to expect from colleagues.

🐣 Junior developer – "newbie in flight"

  • Experience: 0–1.5 years

  • Main tasks: write code according to a clear technical assignment, learn, ask questions, fix bugs

A junior is someone who has just started. He may not know how the product works, why tests are needed, and why if (x = 0) is a bad idea. But if there is a desire to understand, google, listen to the mentor - everything is ahead.

❗ Important: They don't expect genius from a junior, but they do expect responsibility and a desire to grow.

🧱 Middle developer — "the foundation of the team"

  • Experience: 1.5–4 years

  • Main tasks: work independently, make features, participate in reviews, help newcomers

Middle is already a confident specialist. He knows how the project works, can offer a solution, and think through the architecture of a small feature. He knows where to lay the straw, and he fixes himself if something is broken.

✅ Middle is a workhorse on which the whole project is based.

🧙‍♂️ Senior Developer — "architect and strategist"

  • Experience: 4+ years

  • Main tasks: make decisions, design architecture, mentor others

A senior is not someone who just "writes code for a long time." It's a person who knows how to think aheadHe understands business, can argue with the manager, but always on the matter.

💡 Seniors often have fewer lines of code — but more meaning in them.

🧭 Team Lead — "team compass"

  • Experience: often a former senior

  • Main tasks: help the team, assign tasks, hold meetings, mentor

Team Lead not only writes code, but also works with people. He helps the team not to go off course, and each developer to grow.

🧠 A good team leader has strong soft skills and strong nerves.

How does growth happen?

Growth in IT is usually informal. You just you become stronger, and this is noticed:

📌 Skill

Junior

Middle

Senior

Writes code

Understands business objectives

🔸

Designs architecture

🔸

Mentors others

🔸

Performs code reviews

Makes improvements

🔸

🔸 — maybe, but with support or not always.

🧩 Everyone is needed in the team. Without juniors, there will be no growth. Without mid-levels, there will be no features. Without seniors, everything will fall apart. Without team leads, no one will know where to go.
