Every beginner game developer faces the same question: how to come up with a really interesting idea? The one that not only you will like, but also will fascinate the players. The problem is that the brain often produces either too complex concepts or banal clones of existing games. Let's look at specific techniques that will help generate fresh and catchy game ideas.

Start with restrictions, not freedom

Paradoxically, a blank sheet and complete freedom of creativity often lead to a stupor. Try to start with strict restrictions. For example, imagine that you are making a game where there is only one control button. Or a game that should take exactly 30 seconds. Or a project where all control is through voice commands.

Restrictions force the brain to look for non-standard solutions. The game "One Finger Death Punch" is based on the control of two buttons, but this does not prevent it from being dynamic and exciting. "Superhot" limited time - it moves only when you move, and this one mechanic created a unique experience.

Set yourself a specific framework: a maximum of three mechanics, development over the weekend, use only basic geometric shapes. The most creative ideas are born within these boundaries.

Genre collision method

Take two completely different genres and try to cross them. Not superficially, but at the level of mechanics. What happens if you combine tower defense with a visual novel? Or a dating simulator with rogue-like elements? A first-person shooter with farm simulator mechanics?

When Stardew Valley added RPG elements to the farming simulator, it created a new dimension of the genre. "Slay the Spire" combined a card game with a roguelike structure and was incredibly successful. The key is to find an unexpected combination where the mechanics of one genre reinforce another.

Make a list of 10-15 genres that you like and start randomly combining them in pairs. Most combinations will seem strange, but one or two can ignite a real spark.

Emotion as an entry point

Instead of thinking “what the player will do,” ask yourself “what the player will feel.” What emotion do you want to evoke? Tension? Nostalgia? Curiosity? Peace?

Let's say you want to create a feeling of loneliness. How can this be expressed through gameplay? Maybe the player is the only person on the planet where everyone else is a record of the past. Or a spaceship where the AI is slowly degrading, and you need to keep the conversation going so it doesn't go crazy.

"Journey" is built around a sense of connection with a stranger. “Papers, Please” causes moral stress through the simple mechanics of checking documents. Start with an emotional experience, and the mechanics will follow.

"What if?" Technique

This is a classic method of creative thinking that works great for game ideas. You take a common situation and ask the question "what if?". What if gravity changed every 10 seconds? What if you play a villain who is actually trying to save the world? What if the time in the game goes in the opposite direction?

The key word here is specificity. Not just "what if there is magic," but "what if each spell requires the player to draw a rune in 3 seconds, and the accuracy of the drawing affects the power of the spell." The more specific the question, the more interesting answers you will get.

Try to take a popular game and ask 20 "what if" questions about its key mechanics. What if Tetris pieces could only rotate counterclockwise? What if the main character in a platformer can't jump, but can create platforms?

Inspiration from real life

Look at your work, hobbies, or everyday situations. They contain more game mechanics than you might think. A programmer can create a game about debugging code, where bugs are living creatures. A cook can create a game about balancing ingredients under time pressure. A driver can create a parking simulator where each level is a nightmare situation from real life.

"Unpacking" turned unpacking things after moving into a meditative experience and a story about life. "Overcooked" took the chaos of a restaurant kitchen and turned it into a cooperative madness. Ordinary actions become games when you find interesting solutions and consequences in them.

Random word method

Open the dictionary on a random page or use a random word generator. Take three to five unrelated words and try to create a game concept that unites them. For example: "mirror", "debt", "forest", "clock". Perhaps it's a game about a time traveler who has to correct the mistakes of the past using a mirror as a portal, and he has a limited amount of time displayed on a pocket watch.

This method seems absurd, but it forces the brain to look for non-standard connections. Sometimes the strangest combinations lead to unexpectedly catchy ideas.

Simplify to the point

When you have several ideas, try to simplify each to one sentence. If you can't explain the game in 10 seconds, the concept may be too complex. "Portal" is a "puzzle game with a teleportation gun." "Katamari Damacy" is "roll a ball that sticks to everything and grows."

A simple, understandable essence does not mean a simple game. It means a clear idea around which complexity can be built. Minecraft can be described as a "cube structure", but the depth of the game is huge. A clear essence helps players instantly understand what makes your game special.

Watch for what annoys you

Negative experiences are a great source of ideas. What annoys you in your favorite games? Too long downloads? Complicated controls? Unfair mechanics? Take this annoyance and turn it into a feature. If you hate inventory with restrictions, make a game where inventory management is the main mechanic, like in "Resident Evil 4".

"Getting Over It" took the most annoying control and made it a philosophical experience. "QWOP" turned the complexity of a simple action - running - into a viral phenomenon. What annoys is often very memorable.

Prototype quickly

The best way to test an idea is to make the simplest prototype. Not code, not graphics, just mechanics. Take a paper and a pen, or cards, or cubes. Can you play your game on the table? If the basic mechanics work without graphics and sound, it has potential.

Many great games started as desktop prototypes. This is the fastest way to see if your idea is catching on. If you are bored playing your own prototype on paper, adding graphics will not save the situation.

The main rule

Remember: the best game idea is the one you bring to completion. The perfect concept that remains in the head is worth less than a simple but finished game. Start small, make prototypes, test and don't be afraid to change direction if something doesn't work.

The game "hooks" not because it has a brilliant idea, but because the developer found something meaningful in it and brought it to the players. Sometimes the simplest ideas become the most memorable if they are made with love and attention to detail.
