Edge-computing: why the future is not in the clouds

Until recently, everyone was talking about the "clouds" as the future. Data storage and computing in remote data centers seemed to be the ideal solution: scalability, accessibility from anywhere, and reduced infrastructure costs. But today a new player enters the arena — edge-computing (edge computing). And it has every chance to change the rules of the game.

Edge computing is the transfer of computing power closer to the user, to the edge of the network. Instead of sending data to a huge cloud data center thousands of kilometers away, processing takes place on local servers, gateways, or even on the devices themselves (IoT, smartphones, routers).

Thus, the delay is reduced, traffic is reduced and security is increased.

Why clouds are no longer always the solution

Cloud technologies will remain, but they have weaknesses:

Where edge computing is indispensable

  1. Autopilots and transport 🚗 — a car with autopilot cannot wait for a response from the cloud. Decisions must be made instantly right "on board".

  2. Internet of Things (IoT) 📡 — smart homes, industrial sensors, and city cameras process data locally.
