From Spring Boot to Spring Boot 4 and beyond
Today, most projects start with Spring Boot. In the future, we will have even more auto-configuration, improved integration with GraalVM, as well as cloud-native practices by default. Spring will become more and more "cloudy" so that developers do not spend weeks setting up the infrastructure.
Reactive and Project Loom
Spring WebFlux took the first steps towards reactive programming. But Project Loom will bring virtual streams, which will simplify code writing and allow scaling applications to tens of thousands of connections. Spring will most likely support a hybrid approach: both reactive and Loom-oriented code.
Integration with AI and ML services
Developers are increasingly connecting LLM models and data analytics. In the coming years, Spring will receive starter modules for integration with AI-API, tools for orchestrating data streams, and support for AI-driven monitoring.
Spring Cloud 3.0 and multi-cloud
Spring Cloud is actively developing for microservices. Support for multi-cloud scenarios, smart configuration tools and close integration with the Kubernetes ecosystem: Operators, CRD, GitOps are expected.
Safety as a standard
Spring Security will evolve towards Zero Trust architecture, closer integration with OAuth 2.1, OpenID Connect and FIDO2, as well as the introduction of AI prompts for setting up secure configurations.
Where is everything moving?
In the coming years, Spring will become even more cloud-based, lightweight, smart, and reliable. It adapts to a world where flexibility and speed are paramount. The only question is whether it will remain the main framework for Java development or give way to Quarkus and Micronaut.
